All manufactured products coming out of China are valued in USD. The USD being the all mighty American Dollar. The reason for this is because most raw materials are calculated in USD so it just makes it easier for the Chinese to price their manufactured goods in USD. Again there are some smaller manufacturers or non-export orientated factories that sell their goods in RMB, the Chinese currency, but they mainly service their domestic market. That said even factories that sell their goods in RMB are effected when there are currency fluctuations as the raw materials they buy are in USD.

So lately you would have noticed volatility in the currency markets. This is because the Chinese Government decided to devalue their currency the RMB in retaliation to American tariffs on their goods. This in turn spooked investors and causing them to flee fringe currencies like the AUD, or Australian Dollar, for the safety of the USD. So for a country such as Australia all the sudden they would find themselves paying more for imported goods such as custom lanyards. You see even custom lanyards can be effected by the policies of US president Donald Trump.

What is a Lanyard and How Can it Help You

History of the Lanyard

The earliest historical mention of a lanyards is from 15th century France. The word “lanière” referred to a thong or strap apparatus. In the French military, lanyards were used to connect a pistol, sword or whistle (for signalling) to a uniform semi-permanently.^[1] Lanyards were commonly used by cavalry and naval officers at sea. The reason being that a pistol lanyard could easily be removed and reattached by the user while staying connected to the pistol whether it is drawn or in a holster.

In the military, lanyards of various colour combinations and braid patterns are worn on the shoulders of uniforms to denote the wearer’s qualification or regimental affiliation. In horse regiments, lanyards were worn on the left, enabling a rider to pull a whistle from the left tunic pocket and maintain communication with his troop. Members of the British Royal Artillery wear a lanyard which originally held a key for adjusting the fuzes of explosive shells.[2]

So whilst lanyards might seem like a modern phenomena they are something that has a long history but which has adapted to remain relevant.

Nylon Lanyards – Printed nylon lanyards are also a mainstay of the lanyard world. They are more sturdy then polyester lanyards and are also commonly screen printed with a logo. Customers generally go with nylon lanyards as they prefer the smooth finish that comes with this particular material. The smooth finish is nice and shiny and offers a look of elegance. Whilst marginally more expensive then a polyester lanyard they don’t cost too much but to attached a higher MOQ.

Satin Lanyards – Satin lanyards are for people who want a nicer feel to their lanyards. As with satin in general they are nice and smooth but also soft to feel. Satin lanyard would also suit events where the participants are required to wear their lanyards for long periods of time and therefore don’t want the chaffing usually associated with having something hanging from your neck all day long. It is also the lanyard to consider if you want a sublimation print as only the satin lanyard can take this branding method.
